In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of applications based on artificial intelligence in the aviation industry. This technology is said to be ushering in a new era in aviation, equivalent to the introduction of jet engines in the 1950s or fly-by-wire in the 1980s. Air Traffic Management is no exception, but rather one of the areas of aviation that has pioneered the application of this technology.

The expected benefits of this technology are significant, but so are the challenges we still have to solve to maintain aviation safety standards during this transition. Civil aviation authorities, which are responsible for certifying systems, air navigation service providers and application developers must anticipate the unprecedented impact of AI on human-centric aerospace systems and answer a number of critical questions:

  • How can we establish public trust in human-centred AI-based systems?
  • How can we integrate the ethical dimension of human-centred AI (transparency, non-discrimination, equality, etc.) into safety certification processes?
  • What standards, protocols and methods have to be developed to ensure that human-centred AI further improves the current level of air transport safety?

This conference on the use of artificial intelligence in ATM will analyse the main challenges of AI in aviation from different points of view, including research, operation and certification. It will review the European context and its response to these challenges. And finally, it will present recent experiences from projects that try to answer some of these questions
